See my other bamboos listed .Handsome and quick growing, to about 45-60 feet tall, this multi-use plant is known as “sweet shoot’ and is a dense tropical clumping bamboo native of Malaysia. Young shoots are consumed as a vegetable while the stems are used for making furniture and musical instruments . The strong, durable and straight canes ( 4 – 6 inch diameter) are construction grade. Overall, one of our favorite plants. Can grow well in dry & windy locations with good irrigation.Culms : Large tufted woody bamboo with dark green culms of 15-22 m high and 5-10 cm in diameter. Culm internodes are thin-walled and are on average 40–50 cm long. The lower part of the culms develop aerial roots from the nodes. The sheaths of the stem are used in the treatment of nausea and sour stomach. Edible parts : Young shoots - cooked. Very palatable when cooked but acrid raw. Not of the highest quality, but their large size makes them very popular. Extensively eaten in China, they are usually cooked in one change of water. The shoots are harvested in the spring when they are about 8 cm above the ground, cutting them about 5 cm below soil level. The dormant young shoots, harvested in the winter before they emerge above the ground, are especially relished as a delicacy.Other uses : The canes make good water pipes, they are also used for household utensils etc. The short internodes at the lower end of the cane are used as flasks, vases etc. Although the wood is relatively soft, the canes are much used for heavy construction, weaving various types of handicrafts and paper making.
