The Archbishop of Canterbury commissioned Coverdale to create the Great Bible—the first English Bible authorized for daily use in churches. King Henry VIII commanded that a copy of the Great Bible be placed in every church in England. The large folio Bible was often chained to the pulpit. The Great Bible derives its popular name from its initial size, as Cromwell had ordered the setting up of the 'Holy Bible of the largest volume.' It is the only Bible to be 'authorised' in Britain. The Great Bible also brought the translation of the Bible in English to the people in a massive way - just three years after Tyndale's death.
