The book contains a complete unit roster with Civil War service information of every individual soldier in the unit. The citizens of Tidewater reacted immediately to Virginia’s act of secession. Scores of young men throughout the region rallied behind the Stars and Bars. In the spring of 1861, ten companies organized that would later form the 16th Virginia Infantry Regiment, CSA. After a year of inactivity near Norfolk and Charlottesville, the regiment joined General Mahone’s Brigade near Richmond. Within this brigade the 16th Virginia participated in every major campaign fought by the Army of Northern Virginia. Marching through the Old Dominion, Maryland, and Pennsylvania; the Virginians battled at Malvern Hill, Cramptons’s Gap, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Throughout most of these campaigns the unit build a solid reputation as a fighting force. Thee regiment closed the year of 1863 by helping to defend Richmond at Bristoe Stations and Mine Run. Beginning in 1864, the 16th Virginia grappled with the enemy in a series of engagements that would immortalize the unit. The Virginians defended their native state at Spotsylvania, the Wilderness, and Turkey Ridge. Yet it would be a the Crater, that the 16th Virginia experienced its finest hour. On July 30, the Virginians captured seven Union battle flags and earned the praise of General Robert E. Lee and he Confederate government. Following the famous clash near Petersburg, the regiment remained in front of the Cockade City. As Federal divisions encircled the region, the unit was called upon to turn back numerous attacks. The Yankee pressure continue until the 16th Virginia evacuate their defenses with the rest of the arm. Fighting a rearguard action, the regiment stopped at Appomattox, where it surrendered, still a vital part of the Army of Northern Virginia.
