Description: "THE STORY OF THE LIVING WAGE" Incredible detail in a packed composition. (From Matthew, 20) Original copper plate engraving 1593 by IOANNES (JAN, JOHAN) WIERIX (Flemish School, 1549-1620) Inscribed in the plate at the bottom, right of centre Ioan Wierx. Sculp Plate number 72 at top left corner CONDITION/TECHNICAL: Good. Platemark line intact, with good margins beyond. Printed on thin, laid, chainlined paper, which has slight browning/yellowing to it due to age and atmospherics. This impression comes from the 1607 edition of the "Evangelicae Historiae Imagines..." of Hieronymus Natalis published by Jan Moretus in Antwerp. This was an important Jesuit-sponsored Counter-Reformation treatise first published in 1593. Latin titles and captions. Size: Engraved area (platemark area) measures 23 x 14.5 cms. This fine series - one of the most important collections of late 16th century Flemish engravings - which features 153 engravings by Hieronymus Wierix, his brothers Anton and Jan, Karel Van Mallery and Adriaen and Jan Collaert features in virtually every major Museum print collection.
