Description: This is a bound volume containing all 12 issues of The Scots Magazine from 1760 (Volume 22). Each monthly issue has 56 pages; in total there are 672 pages plus Appendix and Index. Any pages that preceded the first page of the Jan. 1760 issue (which, based upon the instructions to the binder on the last page, consisted of “the General Title-page, and the chronological series of events”) are missing. The first two pages (page numbers 1 through 4) are missing a piece in the top corner. (First published in 1739, The Scots Magazine claims to be the oldest magazine in the world still in publication, although there have been several gaps in its publication history.) The magazine contains a variety of articles (news from Scotland and from around the world, history, politics, medicine, poetry, captures/marriages/births/deaths, and more). One of the articles is “Observations upon the North Sea, commonly called the Ice Sea, and upon the communication of several rivers with it. From the French of the celebrated geographer M. Buache.” (Philippe Buache.) Included is a fold-out map (see picture; has wear/tear/stain) entitled “A Map of the Icy Sea in which the Several Communications with the Land Waters and other new Discoveries are exhibited.” This map was contributed/engraved by Andrew Bell. Some of the other articles are: a new method of sweetening sea-water; rise, progress, and end of the Cherokee war (in the southernmost provinces in America; the “Anglo-Cherokee War”); a particular account of M. Thurot’s expedition (the French pirate adventurer); an abstract of the trial of Lord George Sackville; The Story of Francisco de la Vega; military operations at Quebec; an essay on the coinage of Britain; Dr Halley’s dissertation on the transit of Venus over the Sun’s disk in June 1761; a description of a new-invented plough (includes an illustration); An account of the Dunkards, a religious society in Pennsylvania; Dr Storck on the medicinal nature of Hemlock; Articles for the surrender of Canada; The capitulation of Montreal; Accounts of the Cherokee war; The phenomenon of the Milky Way accounted for (by Dr Wm Stukeley); an account of the death of King George II; Ceremonial of the funeral of King George II; an essay on the Rythmus of the ancients.
