Bookplate of Sir Ashton Lever who was a businessman and collector; friend of Captain James Cook. His property included coal mines and Manchester real estate; had a great interest in ornithology. In the 1760s and 1770s, acquired an enormous collection of birds and other natural history. He also collected ethnographical material, owning the largest group of objects brought back by Cook's expeditions.
