THERE IS LINEN TAPE ACROSS THE TOP OF THE SHEET TO MAKE IT THE SAME SIZE AS THE OTHERS IN THE PORTFOLIO. THERE IS A MARGIN TEAR ON THE LEFT EDGE THAT WAS REPAIRED WITH PAPER ON THE REAR A LONG TIME AGO AND HAS DARKENED THE FRONT. THERE IS LIGHT TO MODERATE FOXING NOTED WITHIN THE PLATE AND THIS MIGHT NEED A PROFESSIONAL BATH TO CLEAN IT UP. I am selling both Plate 1 and Plate 2, but separately William Hogarth's Analysis of Beauty Plate 1: The opening engraving for Analysis of Beauty has as its central scene a courtyard filled with some of the most famous works of classical sculpture. It is believed to have been inspired by a passage in Socrates' analysis of beauty based upon art objects in the yard of a friend. In Hogarth's 'yard' the great sculpture is intermingled with various, often comic, contemporary art objects. In the centre (#13) is the Medicean Venus. To the right (#19), a statue of Julius Caesar is being hoisted by a pulley. Beside him stands the famous Apollo Belvedere (#12). To the extreme right a contemporary judge presides with his foot on a cherub (#16). A second cherub, with a gallows in his hand, wipes tears from his eyes with the judge's robe. William Hogarth died in 1764 and this was printed in 1798. This was engraved by Thomas Cook, who always engraved to the same dimensions as Hogarth's original work. From what I have read, he was the only engraver to do so. This was published by G.G & J Robinsons Pater-noster Row August 1, 1798 Many sellers would trim the edges of the paper to eliminate the brown edges. I do not. You can trim or mat out the browning.
