Description: 1880s Victorian Crazy Quilt top This 140 year old quilt top consists of patchwork using various fabrics arranged in squares. The edges are embroidered as well as added elements sewn within some patches. The fabrics are silk, velvet, satin and brocade. The entire composition is sewn atop a patchwork backing made of big squares of ticking stripes and window pane canvas/cotton. Size 79 x 79 inches Border is green velvet The condition is fair, perhaps useful for a dream coat or display. Several squares are fine, one is especially ornate with fan motifs on the corners. Many “shattered” silks and damaged patches. This has a lot of project possibilities and again, potential as a striking composition to display. There is a method of repairing these that involves placing fine sheer mesh over the damaged patched. I’ve done this on a previous quilt with various colored mesh and it was hardly noticeable! There’s always replacement of missing/damaged patches so I consider the value to be based on the merits of the age, condition, potential and artistry.
