Second- an Ample General View of Each County. Third- a Very Full and Minute Topographical Description of Each Town or Township, City, Borough, Village, & c. With an Accurate Map of the State, Horatio Gates Spafford, Printed and Published by H.C. Southwick, Albany, 1813, 334 pp with appendix and fold-out map, full original leather, 8.5 x 5.5”, 8vo. In good condition. Boards are nicely preserved with light scuffing, rounded corners and minor scratches to surface. Joint lightly cracked. Spine extremes typically rounded. Small, old repair along edge of front board. Small worm holes on first fly leaves. Dampness staining and moderate foxing, toning throughout. Does not affect text. Previous owner’s name on old map in old hand. Non-archival tape repairs to map. Still in good, working order. Binding remains tight and intact. No known marginalia. Please see photos. A pre-Civil War gazetteer, with a description of the newly inaugurated Fulton Ferry Company, which was officially established a year after the publication of this volume: "Fulton's Steam Ferry-Boat -- This excellent machine, consisting of a boat with two hulls, connected by a single platform, with a wheel in the space between them, and rudder at each end, built for the conveyance of passengers across the Hudson, between this city and the city of Jersey, has got into successful operation, and promises extraordinary facilities for traveling." The lengthy description goes on to detail the use of horses and wagons (sic) a floating bridge, and the passage of "a corps of flying artillery crossed in the boat from Paulus Hook to this City, on its way to Albany.". (p250). Also with a description of the city of New York: "New York is divided into 10 Wards . the whole population of this City and County, was 96,373 in 1810, of which number 1686 were slaves. . The streets of the ancient of lower part, at the S. end of the island, are irregular, many of them narrow and crooked, with little adaptation to the ground, or to the convenience or elegance of the City. But all the northern part has been more recently laid out, and with much better taste."
