Engraved frontispiece and 2 other engraved plates (one of the Tuscan order of architecture) with 23 wood-engravings in the text displaying forms of heraldic shields, The chapters include accounts of Peter the Great, St Peter's, the Pantheon and other Roman buildings, several churches in Italy, and earthquakes in Sparta, Naples, Sicily and Lima, etc. Using a fictional narrative framework set in Yorkshire, the book instructs the young on classical and renaissance architecture, French and Russian history, heraldry, Greek and Roman sports and games etc. Among the characters is a Negro slave boy. Very scarce volume about which the London Literary Gazette wrote in 1818 that 'Here the noblest and purest passions of the young may be inflamed, their understanding enlightened, their errors corrected, and their heart made better by lessons of virtue.' CONDITION: Good ex-university library non-circulating copy. (The only library marks are a perforation at bottom of Title Page and some markings on the first Contents page. Covers have shelfwear; top 1.5 inch of spine is damaged and chipped, wear at spine ends, small chip at lower spine, some rubbing of leather. A few surface tears on rear pastedown.
