Uriel: A Poetical Address To The Right Honourable Lord Byron Thomas Jones de Powis 1822 Published by the author : London 9.5" by 6" x, 127pp SUMMARY A first edition of this scarce religious polemic, addressing itself to Lord Byron, and employing the medium of poetry as well as supplying notes on his perceived deficiencies First Edition,Publishers' Original Binding,Scarce Overall Condition: Good Only This book weighs 0.5 KG when packed UK Postage: £ 3.99 US Postage: £ 15.99 EU Postage: £ 13.99 European Postage: £ 14.99 Asia Postage: £ 18.99 Worldwide Postage: £ 19.99 DESCRIPTION With the even more scarce half title -because still in its original publishers' boards. Very scarce last seen at auction at Christies in 1982. The work was self-published by the author, and is remarkable in that it seeks to effect some sort of renunciation of sin in the peer. In the preface the anonymous author (who is identified as Thomas Jones de Powis) expresses his wish that "the all pervading Spirit of Light and Life may, by an irresistable energy, carry conviction into the heart of Lord Byron". There follows a series of religious poems, a eulogy for the recently decessed Princess Charlotte, notes on Byron's perceived religious errors in his poetry, and then a homily on Cain. The work is a remarkable and unique piece of evidence for the nature of the scandal that Lord Byron caused in British society. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. CONDITION In the original paper covered boards. Externally with general wear to the boards and the spine. The spine is damaged, with the paper covering suffering loss. The spine label is damaged, with about half of the text lost. The front board has become detached. Internally, with a contemporary ink inscription to the title page. With spots here and there throughout. Firmly bound.
