1830 Villa and Cottage Florist~Main~Whittaker~English Floriculture Garden flower

Description: For sale is an 1830 copy of The Villa and Cottage Florists' Directory by James Main (full title is: The Villa and Cottage Florists’ Directory: being a familiar treatise on floriculture, particularly the management of the best stage, bed and border flowers usually cultivated in Britain. To which are added directions for the management of the greenhouse, hothouse, and conservatory: with the different modes of raising and propagating exotic plants: interspersed with many new physiological observations and various useful lists). This book was published in 1830 in London by Whittaker, Treacher and Co., Ave-Maria Lane. Few copies of this original printing remain.The book is in barely acceptable condition. The cover of the book is stained and marred from its many years of use. The spine was mended with a sturdy green tape many years ago. There is considerable foxing on the back endpaper. The binding is broken, the front hinge is entirely separated, although the back hinge remains secure. However, considering that the book is 185 years old, that is not unreasonable condition. The front endpaper with the "sketch of a flower garden" remains intact and provides proof that this is the original cover. The signatures are each securely bound and bound together, so the book is fully intact, just the front hinge is entirely gone. The book contains no mustiness, mildew, smoky smell or insect damage. It has obviously been well cared for, but well used. Please see the photos for more information.Included with the book is a piece of provenance. It is a letter from the bookdealer, a Mrs. Mabel Chryss, located a 5 Lime Grove, London W12. The residence remains standing and is near the Shepherd's Bush Market tube stop. The book was apparently sold by Mrs. Chryss in March, 1952 to a Mrs. Carl (Elsie) Weller in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her home on Fair Oaks Parkway also remains. The only markings in the book is where Elsie wrote her name and date on the title page. The price in 1952 was $1.50. Please feel free to ask any additional questions.
