1831 Benjamin Maund Botanical Flowers (Set of 6) Lot H

Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Benjamin Maund Hand-Colored Engraved Botanicals 1831 Antique Prints LOT H This is a lot of six (6) different trimmed Benjamin Maund hand-colored engravings by artist Mills & engraved by Watts & others. The cutting of the original larger print was to allow placing into scrapbooks, a common practice in the Victorian age. 1- Lupinus Hartwegii 2- Pyroli rotundifolia 3- Genista radiata 4- Scilla bifolia 5 - Cytisus capitatus 6 - Asphodelus Intens Note: These are from a large group of botanical prints recently acquired. These were originally printed in 1831 in Maund's Botanic Garden as a group of four per page. It was popular in the Victorian Era to cut the pages into four parts and place them in scrap books or mat them as a group. Complete pages are difficult to find, selling from $25-100 depending on condition. I am breaking the 500-600 individual prints I purchased into sets of 4 or more. The selections offered here are NOT as they were originally grouped. Nonetheless, they are a nice representation of beautifully engraved and hand colored botanical prints. One of the flower selections is enlarged so you can see the nice detail and hand coloring. Botanicals have long been a source of pleasure and interest. These beautifully engraved and hand colored images are a perfect addition to any plant lover's collection. There are some great potential in these prints. Many can be matted and framed and look great. These are from The Botanic Garden, Benjamin Maund (c.1790-1864), botanist and book seller. In 1821 he began a series of books. They contain some of the most attractive illustrations of flowers, all exquisitely colored by hand in the year of printing. The sections offered for sale are from 1831-33 volumes. Great for study. The colors in these prints are nice. HOWEVER, the prints do have light aging and a few may be closely trimmed. Please check the pictures. Size: Each small antique color print section is approx. 3" x 4" and blank on reverse side. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
