Marryat edited the work for his friend and shipmate, Edward Howard. The two edited the 'Metropolitan Magazine' together, with Marryat as the editor and Howard as the sub-editor. With the bookplate of Sir Norton Joseph Knatchbull, the 10th Baronet of Mersham Hatch to the front pastedown of volume II. This is one of Howard's better known works, the other being 'Sir Henry Morgan'. With a frontispiece and two plates to each volume by Auguste Jean Jacques Hervieu, the French painter and book illustrator. Hervieu worked in London and exhibited at the Royal Academy. He created the illustrations for Frances Trollope's 'A Summer in Brittany' and many more works by Trollope. Regarded as a semi-autobiographical tale by many, despite this never being confirmed by Howard, 'Rattlin the Reefer' looks at the protagonist's early schooling, to life as a midshipman and his experiences sailing. Told in a humorous manner, this story's accuracy regarding life at sea is one of its charms and the reasoning for it receiving such high praise. Howard has clearly drawn on his own life experiences in the early 1800's in the Navy. CONDITION In a half straight grained morocco binding. Externally, smart.
