Subscription-paying members would have access to the organization’s gallery, would receive at least one print, and New York City members would be entered into drawings to win a painting from the art union’s gallery. Existing from 1839 to 1851, it suffered financial difficulties and allegations of mismanagement in its later years, especially since subscribers would not buy subscriptions until they knew what art was being raffled off, yet the art union needed those funds in advance to pay for the pieces to raffle. William Cullen Bryant was the organization’s president at the time of this edition.COLPAP-1408
