COMPANY: MASON & BURNSPRODUCT: BEER or MINERAL WATERLOCATION: RICHMOND, VIRGINIA ITEM: ONE (1) BEER BOTTLEAGE: circa 1859 - 1862SIZE: 6-1/2" high, 2-5/8" diameterDESCRIPTION: "MASON & BURNS". Offered at auction is this RARE emerald green beer bottle from Richmond, Virginia! Mason & Burns was a bottler of porter, ale, beer, and mineral water, and was located at No. 24 Main Street, Richmond, Virginia. This squat bottle variant has what appears to be a sand pontil and was manufactured between approximately 1859 and 1862. More precisely, due to the discovery location, this particular bottle is most likely from the Confederate Army occupation of Roanoke Island in 1861 and early 1862. This is an early bottle variant used by the brewery, prior to the introduction of block lettering opposite the embossed brewery name. If you ever wondered what provisions the Confederate troops had shipped-in from Richmond early in the Civil War, this bottle provides a partial answer. This blob top bottle was discovered on private land over 40 years ago among the area of Confederate occupied forts located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. According to Wikipedia, “[d]uring the American Civil War, the Confederacy fortified the island with three forts. The Battle of Roanoke Island (February 7–8, 1862) was an incident in the Union North Carolina Expedition of January to July 1862, when Brigadier General Ambrose E. Burnside landed an amphibious force and took Confederate forts on the island. Afterward, the Union Army retained the three Confederate forts, renaming them for the Union generals who had commanded the winning forces: Huger became Fort Reno; Blanchard became Fort Parke; and Bartow became Fort Foster. After the Confederacy lost the forts, the Confederate Secretary of War, Judah P. Benjamin, resigned. Roanoke Island was occupied by Union forces for the duration of the war, through 1865.” A great addition to your Civil War North Carolina or Richmond, Virginia bottle collection!CONDITION DETAILS: NEAR MINT.
