The U.S. attempted to purchase Cuba in 1848 and in 1854 from Spain, and did take over Cuba in 1898 as a U.S. territory within the Treaty of Paris until the Island's independence in 1902. In 1859, the United States was interested in Cuba's potential as a territory. and private citizens were organizing armed expeditions to the island.
