Description: 1859 Cobb & Co Leviathan Coach Horse & Buggy Cabinet Card Photo/Lithograph Ballarat Gold Rush Era. Measurements are 7 3/4" long and just under 6" high. This historic piece of art is an embossed lithograph of the infamous Leviathan in Australia during a trip between Ballarat & Geelong. This illustration was created by H. Deutsch in the late 1850s. The exact date of this event is undetermined but believed to be 1858-1859. There are a few of these prints known to exist (Ive attached photos of the 4 I have found other then mine) and they are currently being held in museums and or libraries. I havent found any records of them being sold on the market. I believe my version may be the 1st and could be an original hand lithograph. Reasons being, The inks blend together which originals tend to do. there isnt a plate outline present. there is less illustration on this copy compared to the others. The other prints have darker lines and a few clouds above the building. Additionally, the image has a glossy coating to protect the ink. Furthermore, there is writing on both sides, it says Driver & J.D. MORGAN Builder Ballorat. The pen is written in the same font as the middle title which signifies it was H. Deutsch (the artist) that wrote this. Furthermore right above where it says driver there is a signature/autograph by Edward Devine. This could have been a personal copy the artist made for himself as its unlike the other copies that exist. Devine was a world famous coach driver, considered to be the most skilled of his time. Deutsch may have been a fan and had the opportunity to meet him to sign the photo/print. With the rarity and lack of information concerning this item the history isnt quite clear. However. I am sure its an authentic original copy and the most unique and interesting know version I have seen. Without a doubt, it belongs in the Cobb & Co museum, the Gold Rush museum, or something in that related category. It is a wonderful rare piece of art and history in its original form. Truly one of a kind and something very special to own for any enthusiast. Please look over pictures to see overall condition and details! If any extra information is known regarding this item I'd be happy to hear! Thanks & good luck in the auction!
