Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free end paper. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, many in-text engraved vignettes, and eleven engraved plates to the rear by Tuffen West (1823-1891). John George Wood, or Reverend J. G. Wood (1827-1889), was an English writer whose successful work popularised natural history in the nineteenth century. Following an introduction to the microscope, Wood describes the structures of over four hundred specimens from animals, vegetables, and minerals. CONDITION In the publisher's original pictorial boards. Externally, sound, remaining bright to the boards though bumped to the extremities. Lacking the backstrip. Small marks to the boards. Rear hinge is tender but held by webbing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
