Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE 1866 Shield Nickel, Repunched Date, Fletcher-09, FS-306/401. The extremely heavy die clashes characteristic of this variety are readily visible, with obvious detail from the Reverse Rays visible behind and within the Shield as well as the "S" of STATES clearly visible above the second 6 in the date. A bit of a later die state for this Obverse, but struck before replacing the Reverse die that appears on F-09a (FS-306/901). The combination of the clashing and further extended use of the die was enough to blunt the Shield details in the upper field and the vertical stripes - most of the missing detail is strike due to the LDS and not wear. The Reverse has its own problem, as there is a bulge in the field at about 5:00 (image shown) and it was developing die cracks where the die had sunk. In this case, this was possibly due to poor annealing, leading to failure after clashing although this side does not show ready evidence of that. That also suggests why this Reverse die was replaced with the Reverse used on FS-306/901. A very old light cleaning is visible although the color is good, and traces of luster remain. As I could not quite get a good enough image of the RPD feature, I have included a second image of the date area, courtesy of NGC (this is of a similar coin, not that being offered). Other than the missing central detail of the Shield, oddly enough well struck, with full radials on the Reverse rays and complete stars. On balance, I would call this EF/AU. Valued at $265 EF, $440 AU in the 6th Ed. of Cherrypickers. Due to value this will require shipping with Signature Confirmation, hence the S&H shown. 0723-03 Please Note: We require payment within four days of purchase, unless you contact us for other arrangements in advance of purchase.
