Description: T 1868 1st Edition Hard Cover - Harriet Beecher Stowe - Men of Our Times - 155 Years Old in Great Condition - 575 Pages 5.75” x 8.75” Condition: I don’t know book grades so I will grade it like a coin, which I have much experience doing. Book is an Extra Fine 47. (Coins grade from 1 to 70, 60 to 70 is mint, 50 to 59 Almost uncirculated with Extra Fine right below it) Pages are bright white & covers are tight. No pages are torn or detached from the spine as far as what I saw. I did not go through the entire book, just enough to snap some photos to show you. Bottom front & back hard cover has some glue separation near the bottom & the outer paper edges have browned. Very few brown spots on the interior & all the soft tissue like paper is good that covers the illustrations / steel engravings. Overall a very nice book & way above average condition considering it’s over 155 years old. The gold Gilt is all sharp & intact. All the illustrations of the men are in excellent near Mint condition. See the many photos that I took. This is an original hardcover edition of Men Of Our Times by Harriet Beecher Stowe (author of Uncle Tom's Cabin), published by Hartford Publishing Co. in 1868. The book is in English, with illustrations, and is considered a first edition. It features leading patriots of the day and their historical wit and wisdom. The book is not personalized. It was printed in Hartford Connecticut, United States. This item falls under the Antiquarian & Collectible and Books & Magazines categories. Obtained this at an estate sale & the previous owner had a humongous library like you see in the movies. Dark hardwood & book shelves from floor to ceiling around the entire room. I don’t know much about books so I grabbed the ones on or near his desk while others were going through he shelves. I figured a collector is going to keep his best books close to where he sits. I plan on adding this to an auction in the near future as time permits & I thought I would just list the books I have here on eBay before that happens & offer them to my customers first. This book in its current condition has a value of $250 to $500 (that’s what it is estimated by “Live Auctioneer” to sale for. One in worse condition than mine sold for $280. Other similar sold for $195, $250, $190 & $196. One that wasn’t a 1st edition sold for $50. When you see these listed cheap, they are either later later edition or the condition sucks. Auction fees are much worse than eBay, so someone buy it, quick. 🤣. This is an excellent book to add to your collection or as a gift to someone you know that loves books.I included photos of this & other sales at the end of the photo listings & added a lot of photos of the book.
