He participated in land sale and negotiations with the New Zealand Company at the beginning of the colonization of New Zealand. He was central to the Wairau Affray in Marlborough, considered by many to be the first of conflicts in the New Zealand Wars. Te Rauparaha was a signatory of the Treaty of Waitangi. Before he died Te Rauparaha directed the building of Rangiatea Church in Otaki. The illustration is after a drawing made on site in the year 1844 by George French Angas ( 1822 - 1886 ), an English explorer, naturalist, painter and poet who emigrated to Australia in 1844. He was the eldest son of George Fife Angas, who was prominent in the early days of the colonisation of South Australia. --------- Condition. Aged paper.
