Proctor " Proctor created this map in the year 1867. ------------ Richard Anthony Proctor (1837 -1888) was an English astronomer. He is best remembered for having produced one of the earliest maps of Mars in 1867 from a series of drawings by the English astronomical observer William Rutter Dawes. Proctor interpreted the light and dark areas on Mars as continents and seas, which made the planet look similar to Earth and led people to wonder if it was also inhabited by intelligent beings.
