Description: Stereoview photograph of a bridge and building at the Dalles of the St. Croix near Taylor’s Falls, Minnesota, by Charles A. Zimmerman of St. Paul, Minnesota, circa 1870s. The view, no.731 (in negative) and entitled View in the Dalles of the St. Croix, shows a bridge spanning a gorge high above a river. The bridge is anchored to the cliffs either side, and there’s a building by it at the left side. Note the graffiti on the rock in the foreground. The St. Croix River separates the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin here. I believe the photograph is from the Minnesota side, at the location of the present day Interstate Park. Charles A. Zimmerman (1844-1909) was a German French immigrant who came to Minnesota just before the Civil War. He served in the 6th Minnesota Infantry and saw action fighting the Sioux during the Dakota War of 1862. He worked as a photographer in partnership with Joel A. Whitney immediately after the war and then worked alone in St. Paul for the balance of his life. The stereoview is in good to very good condition with only light wear and soiling. Note the light rubbing and bumping at the corners of the card. The photographs exhibit good to very good tonal range and show good to very good detail. A nice early Minnesota stereoview!
