Description: Covers and spine in unusually good condition. Of the copies currently listed on eBay at present (3/14/23), very few seem to have less external wear than this copy, or so it appears, but additional copies could be added at any time, of course. First edition, second state (there is no footnote on page 120, and no “Hospital Sketches” on page 299, an indication of the 2nd state of the first edition - see final photo of p. 299). Binding firm. No writing on the pages, but there is odd spotting of unknown origin here and there through the book. The large majority of the pages have no notable spots or marks, but perhaps as much as a quarter of the pages have some kind of spot on them, however minor - some of which may be foxing. It’s difficult to say what caused the spots. The photos shown represent the largest or most obvious spots I found when leafing through the pages, so the photos with spots aren’t representative of the book as a whole, but I thought the worst spots should be shown, to avoid any unpleasant surprises. For balance I also included some photos of pages that have little to no spotting, which constitute the majority of the book, as mentioned. The front free endpaper had been inexplicably but neatly removed before we acquired the book. A new FFEP could be tipped in easily enough, but I have not found exactly the right paper to use, so have left it as shown. Please examine photos closely if interested, and feel free to ask a question, or to request an additional photo. An adult recipient at the eBay registered address will need to sign for the book at delivery. Thanks for looking.
