A great find from a local Massachusetts estate! This antique volume is over 147 years old! 1st Edition. Illustrated. Publisher decorative brown cloth binding is in good shape overall, showing light soiling and rubbing to the boards and spine, sunning to the spine, some general wear around the extremities including bumping to the corners and wear to the cloth at the spine extremes, and some rubbing and light spotting to the page edges. Gilt title lettering to the spine shows some rubbing but still displays nicely from the shelf. Internally this volume is in good shape overall. The binding feels a bit loose, and there is moderate cracking to the front hinge, but both boards remain attached. Likewise, there is cracking visible to the gutter internally, and there are a few loose page groupings, including one that is very loose, however this volume is complete and all groupings do remain attached to the binding. Former owner’s bookplate visible to front pastedown endpaper. Otherwise clean with no signatures, inscriptions or library markings to note. The text block itself is in great condition throughout. Pages show just light toning from age, as well as the odd spot of light foxing, as well as some scattered light markings in pencil in the margins. There’s also some heavy foxing to a page caused by some ephemera that was stored in the book. Otherwise this volume is well preserved and perfectly readable throughout!
