Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914) was professor who commanded the 20th Maine during the Civil War. He is best known for his unit’s bayonet charge against Confederate forces on Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg, which earned him the Medal of Honor. Following the war, he served as Governor of Maine from 1867 to 1871. Suffering lifelong injuries sustained at the Battle of Petersburg, he died from complications in 1914 and is considered by some to be the Civil War’s final casualty. COLPAP-1413
