1880 "Reynold's New Map of London" - Fine Hand Color

Description: A superb and unusually large folding map of London by James Reynolds entitled : "Reynolds's New Map of London and its Suburbs. The Map is divided into Quarter Mile Segments for Measuring Distances." The map is hand colored, dated 1880 and divided into 40 segments, laid on linen. Overall size is 40 x 27 inches, folding down to 6 x 4 inches. The mapped territory extends from Willesden Park in the North-West to Leyton in the North-East - and from Barnes in the South-West to Blackheath in the South-East. Fascinating detail of the City still under rapid development with all new bridges, stations, rail lines, tramways and underground train routes marked (the Circle Line wasn't completed until 1886) Very good condition with one minor tear to the linen at the edge. There is however a novel fault which is not readily noticeable but can be easily corrected if desired - the map publisher's assistant has attached one of the 40 segments upside down! Because of the even curvature of river flow in Docklands, the segment featuring the Isle of Dogs should be turned 180 degrees to the right! - see scan. Reynolds produced numerous maps and tourist guides of London and the surrounding areas as well as various astronomical and scientific charts. After Reynolds retired his sons, William Henry and Frederick, took over his business, updating and reprinting many of his maps and charts before selling the firm to Charles Smith in the late 19th century. Reynolds operated out of office at 174 Strand Street, London.
