Presbyterian minister Charles Seymour Robinson, D.D., LL.D., (March 31, 1829 – February 1, 1899), was a pastor, and an editor and compiler of hymns. Robinson, in 1876–1877 was editor of the Illustrated Christian Weekly, and compiled and published several successful hymn-books. The first was the Songs of the Church in 1862, revised as the Songs for the Sanctuary in 1865, which was "very widely adopted". Around the time of his return from Europe to New York City there was a demand for an additional work of a slightly different character which he met by issuing (through the Century Company) the book called Spiritual Songs, 1878. Robert Stuart MacArthur (July 31, 1841 – February 23, 1923) was a Baptist preacher, lecturer, and author. He was a longtime pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in New York City, raising it to prominence in his more than 40 years there. MacArthur's publications include hymnals, sermon collections, and apologetic works. On the front cover, the name printed in gilt - Grace Vander Kolk has nothing to do directly with this hymnal, it is just likely that the book was bound specifically for her. Condition-wise the cover is in rough shape, with no spine covering and the boards showing wear held on tenuously by binding strings, but the textblock is stable and interior nearly very good. My scanner tends to react with some types of old paper and tends to make the toning more pronounced than it really is. While 21st century reprints of this work abound, 19th century originals are quite scarce, and obviously collectible. 6" x 8 3/8" x 1 1/8"
