Description: 1883 Shield Nickel, last year issue of this original "nickel" denomination concept, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by NGC as AU55. As a last-year issue, the Shield Nickel shares its 1883 minting history with the first minting of the next design, the Liberty head nickel. Nickel five cent coins achieved commercial success by then, as people accepted them and found them convenient. But even though nickels - like today - were 75% copper and 25% nickel (and yet, we never called them "coppers"), that was enough nickel to damage existing Mint equipment, which had been used for softer copper, silver, and gold. So the Mint went through some dies, to be sure. This specimen offered for you here is does have a minor die crack or two on both sides, It features slight toning that makes this Choice AU coin slightly bronzed and, depending on the light, with reds and multicolours to blues.
