Description: A Marsh Island. By Sarah Orne Jewett and printed in Boston by Houghton, Mifflin and Company. 1885. First edition and first printing. 292 + [12] pp. 7.25” x 5”. 12mo, hardcover full cloth. In good condition, with light rubbing and wear to exterior, including small stain marks in center of front board. Minimal cracking and starting at front and rear hinges. Text block remains bound well. Bookplate and inscriptions of Grace Cartwright Cheney (1875-1956) of Concord, Massachusetts at front. Includes publisher’s catalogue at rear, including other works by Jewett. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce first edition and first printing of the work by Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909), an American novelist and poet. Considered the “first gay American novel” by sources such as Don James McLaughlin, the novel may have been attributed to Jewett’s own sexuality, with her private correspondence and relationships with other women clearly implied same-sex attraction. Unsigned binding attributed to Sarah Wyman Whitman (1842-1904), a friend of Jewett responsible for several bindings for her novels. COLL1885CFJX-0824-aj2329
