See all photos c Item 486025 ◊ 1890's Antique Victorian Paper Dolls From Lion Coffee - The Barber Very rare and fascinating "1890's Antique Victorian Paper Dolls From Lion Coffee - The Barber." The set includes three parts: 1) a Barber chair, 2) the customer (the girl who sits in the barber chair), and 3) the barber (or maybe he is the Barber's apprentice. He looks a bit young.) (Note: missing is part 4, which is a second outfit for the girl.)The main scene, when the parts are put together shows the girl sitting in the chair, an extra chair, and the boy working on her hair. According to Wikipedia (it's on the internet, so it must be true) traditionally a Barber only cuts men's hair. A hairdresser is a person, who not only cuts hair but also styles it. Throughout history there are stories and evidence that highly placed, and well-to-do women (and men too) had their hair styled in their homes or later at a salon, by a servant, or maid, or someone specifically trained in the art of styling hair. So it is interesting to say the least, that the occupation of "Barber" is included in the Lion Coffee paper dolls, AND that he is working on a girl's hair. I guess he was just ahead of his time. The three parts in the Barber series measure 1) the chair, approx. 3-5/8" x 2-3/4", 2) the girl in a chair 4-5/8" x 2-1/4", and 3) the barber 5-1/2" x 2" The Paper Dolls were one of several inserts, which were used for advertising by the Woolson Spice Company, Toledo, OH, and was included in packages of their Lion Coffee. Not being ones to waste good advertising space, on the back of the three parts are the following jingles: "It grows on a tree and is then roasted and called Lion Coffee," "Some Coffees Sell for More, Some for Less, but Lion Coffee is the Most Satisfactory." Plus on the reverse of the Barber chair is a diagram, which show how the parts fit together, as well as the advertising bi-line, "Lion Coffee Leads the World."These wonderful and original "Paper Dolls" are in very good condition. The images are still clean, and sharp, with strong contrast and rich tonality. Note that the girl piece (the girl sitting on a stool) is designed via slits in the cardboard, to also fit together with the Barber Chair piece. However at some time in the past, the paper tore into two parts. It was repaired with archival tape. Please see all of the photos of these Paper dolls above, to confirm the contents and condition of the dolls. These Victorian-era paper toys were once given away by the Woolson Spice Company as insert premiums. And Woolson Spice, the parent company was one of the most important users of this advertising gimmick. The die-cut, standup figures could be played with alone or combined with others into play sets or mini-panoramas.To be sure this "1890's Antique Victorian Paper Dolls From Lion Coffee - The Barber" is a very rare and quite wonderful example Chromolithography of the time, and would be a fantastic addition to any Victorian era collection!!!------------------Be sure to check out our additional listings for a number of other Victorian era advertising trade cards, hand bills, post cards and brochures which are also being offered for sale this week on eBay by PENchantiques091924-Ns OUR POLICIES COMMUNICATION: We want you to be happy with your transaction, and GOOD COMMUNICATION is the key to YOUR HAPPINESS.
