Description: This colorful card was issued as an insert premium with the Hard A Port Cut Plug , Wake Up Cut Plug , and Trumps Long Cut Brands of Tobacco and Cigarettes during the late 1880’s or early 1890’s. The Hard-A-Port brand was manufactured by several companies at the time including Moore & Calvi , The Maclin Zimmer McGill Tobacco Co. , John H. Maclin & Sons , and J.N. Cullingworth Inc. The card series is entitled “ Playing Cards” , and consists of 53 cards (a full deck and one joker). It is listed as series N458 in Burdick’s American Card catalogue. The fronts of the cards are set up in a playing card style, with fairly buxom women dressed in Burlesque style costumes,. These cards must have been considered fairly scandalous in their day. Due to the different brands and Companies that this series was issued with there are several different back variations. This back features the Macklin-Zimmer Tobacco Co company, with Factory Number 10 overprint on the back, and is the 8 of Spades. The card itself measures 3 7/8 inches by 2 1/4 inches approximately. The card does have some slight corner wear, but is free from major creases. I have scanned the cards front and back fairly large for you to be able to judge condition for your self. This card would make an excellent gift for anyone interested in early risqué images (does this qualify as vintage erotica ?) or early Theatre / Burlesque History (some of these ladies look like they could have just walked of the stage at the Moulin Rouge ). It is also a fantastic cross-over collectable, highly sought after by both collectors of playing cards, and Tobacco cards. Don't miss out on this over 120 year old piece (a true America antique) Where else can you get such a beautiful Victorian RISQUE Lithograph of this age and quality, this inexpensive. I will be trying to list several EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories), including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Cigarettes , Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities, Dog Breeds, Circus themes and many more.
