Ives later became a banker, President of the New York Stock Exchange, President of the Northern Pacific Railroad and a famous collector of fine art and books. The Northern Pacific Railroad was established by an Act of Congress and President Abraham Lincoln on July 2, 1864 as the first northern transcontinental railroad in the United States. Much of its route was to follow the route of the famed 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition across the uncharted West. The certificate remains in Excellent condition. It was issued May 14, 1895. It has various cancellation punch holes which affect signature slightly (see picture) and a few small pin holes which is normal for this era stock. Still carries issue stub on left margin of certificate. This historic document was printed by the American Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a train by telegraph lines and a lower vignette of Fredrick Billings. This stock certificate is 129 years old. Own a piece of 19th Century Railroad and Civil War history!!! It is a beautiful old stock, best of the 'big boy railroads'. Thank you for looking!!
