Description: Up for sale is a trophy example of the rarest 1899 $1 Black Eagle Silver Certificate. This is the Fr 229a with Vernon-McClung signatures and date moved to the right side. This is by far the earliest / lowest serial known for this variety by 1.2 million serial numbers!!! That is a crazy gap. They must have had only one plate of the 229a finished and running to test it out or this was a preliminary first printing and then they pulled the plate while they analyzed the change in design. Either way, it is truly amazing that if they had started a new serial number block for the 229a and this was a low number, the next known serial would be a 7 digit number! It is a shame that the 229 and 229a were run concurrently and there is no record of the first serial of 229a. This was likely a prototype of the design change as it has plate number #6752 and I have regular 229 notes in my collection with plate numbers in the 6760s up to 6775. Looking at other 229a notes, it looks like most began in the 6770s and went into the 6800s. So this may be a prototype plate or the first print run, but I just do not have the data. Anyways, this note is the lowest known serial by over a million notes. I compared the census data to images and auction records I could find, and the next lowest serial I could verify began with Y24xxxxxx. Just the Fr 229a itself is the key to the series with a very short print run. Almost the entire run of Vernon-McClung notes had the date under the serial number. The date was moved at the very end of production just before the signatures changed. This note is professionally PMG graded Choice Fine 15 with no comments. It has even circulation and good color on the printing. Grab this extreme rarity while you can, only one person can own the lowest serial of any note, and the 229a being the key is a doozie! Sent with signature confirmation. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
