An impressive copy of this large work of reference, first published by William and Robert Chambers in 1872.This edition of was edited by Rev. Thomas Davidson to include explanations of significant words embalmed in the literature of the previous three hundred years.Davidson was the assistant editor of Chambers' Encyclopedia. Containing Scotch words of Burns and Scott and slang words of Dickens, as well as the Americanisms of Mark Twain. This work is rich in offering the pronunciations, explanations and etymology of each word. CONDITION In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with slight fading to the spine and shelf wear. Marks to the boards, heavier to the rear. Internally, the last leaf is disbound, otherwise firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with offsetting to the endpapers and scattered spotting to the front endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
