Man's age-old dream of conquering the skies and approaching the stars -- a dream that dates back thousands of years to Greek mythology -- has taken giant steps nearer reality in just the past 177 years. Just how great has been the progress of man's master of the air is shown in these pictures: Left, a reproduction from an old print showing the balloon devised by the first successful aerialist, Montgolfier, a Frenchman, in January, 1784. This contraption, 100 feet in diameter and 130 feet high, managed to struggle up to 3,000 feet, before exploding. Top picture shows the Wright Brothers "box kite" taking off at Kitty Hawk on its first flight in 1903. That flight reached a top speed of 31 miles an hour and covered 120 feet, which is about 20 feet less than the wingspan of the ocean-hurdling, 150-passenger 600-mile-an-hour Pan American Airways jet Clipper shown below. Coming in the next few years: Giant supersonic airliners carrying 150 passengers at 1,500 to 2,000 miles an hour. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated --1903.
