Marie Michailowa, first coloratura at the Imperial Opera St PEtersburg, was the first international recording star: Her first recordings for Gaisberg and Berliner were pressed worldwide, though she never left Russia. Not only is Michailowa one of the great coloratura sopranos on record, but these "close miked" early G&Ts reproduce the voice and the solo instrument in stunning clarity. A flute or violin never sounded as good on an acoustic record. A wonderful rendition of Lullaby from Jocelyn with startling fidelity with piano M. A. Michailova (vocalist: soprano vocal) w a superb uncredited Cello Lullaby from Jocelyn O sladko pochivay Benjamin Godard (composer) Early 3 line Patent Pressing 10" 78 rpm Condition: EXCELLENT close to pristine faint scuffs, plays EXCEPTIONALLY quiet A SUPERB COPYMikhailova, Maria Alexandrovna, soprano, * 3.6.1866 (according to other sources 1864) Kharkov, † 18.1.1943 Perm (then Molotov) in the Urals; she came from a Russian-Dutch family, her mother's family name was van Puteren. She began her training with Mme Groewing-Wilde in Kharkov and the St. Petersburg Conservatory, then a student of St. Yves-Bax in Paris and Rauzzoni in Milan. Debut in 1892 at the Marienskij Theater (Court Opera) of St. Petersburg as Queen Marguerite in the "Huguenots" of Meyerbeer. She sang there on 18.12.1892 in the world premiere of Tchaikovsky's opera "Jolanthe" a small role, on 29.10.1895 in the premiere of the trilogy "Oresteia" by Taneyev the role of Elektra. Throughout her career she remained in St. Petersburg, where she was celebrated by Tsarist Russia. She has performed in Moscow, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa and other Russian cities. Their great roles were the Ludmilla in Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmilla," the Antonida in "Life for the Tsar," the Lakmé, the Micaela in "Carmen," the Tamara in Rubinstein's "Demon," the Gilda in the "Rigoletto," the Juliette in Roméo et Juliette, Nannetta in Verdi's Falstaff (which she created for Russia in 1894 in Russia), Amina in La Sonnambula, and Marguerite in the Huguenots. It became world-famous through its records, which appeared since 1900 and aroused general admiration. Nevertheless, she never managed to persuade the artist to leave Russia; only in 1903 she was a guest in Prague. Oscar Hammerstein tried in vain to oblige her to the he founded Manhattan Opera House in New York. However, she is said to have undertaken a concert tour through Japan in 1907. In 1912 she took her leave of the stage at the Marienski Theater in St. Petersburg as Antonida in Glinka's "Life for the Tsar". In 1913 or 1914 she is said to have made another concert tour in Russia. She later lived in Leningrad. Apparently she got into financial difficulties after the October Revolution; In 1921 she wrote a petition for help to the Directorate of the Opera of Leningrad. Nothing is known about her future circumstances. During the siege of Leningrad by the German troops in the Second World War, she was evacuated to Perm in the Urals, where she died in 1943. - Her voice belongs to the most beautiful, which is preserved from the early days of the record; sovereign mastery of technique and stylistically confident performance are balanced in their interpretations. Numerous records, the oldest still Berliner Records (1900-01), then G & T (also since 1900), Columbia, Lyrophon, HMV and Pathé; a recording on Amour Records. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.
