Description: 1910 (T219) Miner's Extra - Series of Champion Pugilists - Joe Jeannette On the Set - The 1910 T219 Champions Pugilists Set consists of 50 cards, each measuring 2 1/4" x 2 7/8". Unlike most early 1900s tobacco cards, these cards are almost square in shape, resembling the gum card issues of the 1930s. The T219 cards feature color lithographs of boxing stars on the front, with their names printed in small capital letters. The cards were produced in both horizontal and vertical formats, and some athletes are depicted in multiple poses across different cards. The common advertising backs of these cards display advertisements for Honest Long Cut Tobacco, while rarer versions feature ads for Miner's Extra (as in the card for sale) and Red Cross brands. On the Boxer - Jeremiah "Joe" Jeannette (1879-1958) was one of the top heavyweight boxers of the early 20th century. Despite his impressive record against fighters of all races, Jeannette was never given the chance to fight for the heavyweight championship due to racial discrimination. However, he did secure the World Colored Heavyweight Championship twice. Jeannette's most legendary fight took place on April 17, 1909, in Paris, France, where he faced Sam McVey in a rematch that lasted three-and-a-half hours and 49 rounds. This bout was the longest boxing match of the 20th century and remains one of the sport's greatest marathons. Jeannette retired in 1919 at the age of 40, having fought 166 documented professional bouts. He recorded 106 wins, including 68 by knockout, and suffered 20 losses, only two of which were by knockout—one early in his career and one late. Unlike many boxers of his era, Jeannette was financially savvy, wisely investing his earnings. After retiring from boxing, he owned a gym, a garage from which he operated a fleet of rental limousines, and a taxi company.
