Hardcover bound in blue cloth with title in gilt on front cover and spine. Illustrated pastedown on front cover. Binding is rubbed, has a ring mark on rear cover. Front pastedown has an attractive bookplate of Alfred Irenee DuPont and Jessie Ball DuPont on front pastedown. Stain mark on lower right corner of front flyleaf. Bookseller stamp on lower left corner of rear pastedown. Text is toned, with occasional foxing. Alfred Irenee DuPont (1864-1935) was an American industrialist who helped run his family's gunpowder manufacturing plant based in Deleware. He married his third wife, Jessie Dew Ball (1884-1970) in 1921. Jessie Ball DuPont was born in Northumberland County, Virginia and was an investor in her own right and helped manage the family fortune. The DuPonts were also philanthropists, donating large sums of monies to universities and museums. Jessie Ball DuPont also helped with the preservation of Stratford Hall Plantation in Virginia, the family home or General Robert E. Lee. In 1937 she attended the coronation of King George VI. The bookplate is very attractive and also features the Wilmington, Delaware home of the DuPonts, Nemours Mansion and Gardens.
