Description: 1921 THE WORLD IN 1931 Futurist fantasy novel Stewart E. Bruce. THE WORLD IN 1931 (NY: F.L.Searl, 1921) Original softcover binding, 122pp. Former owner's ink inscription on title-page. Very Good condition. The author was a Canadian-born real estate broker who resettled in Pasadena. The book is written in the form of a novel about a man who went off to live on an island for 10 years. The Los Angeles Times says it seeks to "fasten the guilt" for the World War on the Allies. It is decidedly pro-German with racist comments on Asians and, while correctly predicting a coming economic upheaval, forecasts the nation being led by an industrial "Committee of 50" following somewhat ambiguous economic policies. Before his death in 1924, Bruce gave lectures under the auspices of a "Rationalist Society". The book seems to be a foretaste of the technocratic futurism and economic panaceas which flourished during the Great Depression.
