Description: In an age when the New York teams the Giants and Yankees were dominating Major League Baseball, the Washington Senators rose up from American League doormat status, to do the impossible, by beating the Giants in the 1924 World Series. Throughout their 60-year tenure in Washington, the Senators finished first just 3 times, and this was their only championship. Game 7 of the ’24 Fall Classic went 12 innings, and late inning bounces and breaks, make us believe the Senators were fated to win. That, and four scoreless relief innings from Hall of Fame hurler Walter Johnson, who got the win. From Johnson’s estate, comes this 1924 World Series Game 7 photograph. The scene is the bottom of the 12th inning at Griffith Stadium, with Senators catcher “Muddy” Ruel streaking home to score the Series clinching run. Ruel had doubled making good on a baseball afterlife he was gifted, when his Giants counter part Hank Gowdy dropped a foul pop-up behind the plate. Outfielder Earl McNeely followed with a bad-hop over third baseman Freddie Lindstrom, for the walk-off hit that scored Ruel. Sized at 10x14, this 100-year-old photograph hits the scene just in time for the Centennial Anniversary of the Senators only World Series win. Local DC clothing merchant Fred Pelzman has signed at bottom-left, with “Best Wishes” and “The Fashion Shop”, which was the name of his store. Though the sepia-tone photo shows considerable wear, it is a scarce survivor, with a fantastic scene being played out in front of packed stands. Accompanying is an LOA signed by Walter Johnson’s grandson Henry Thomas, and the scene is readily matched with available film clips of the event.
