John Macdonald was a Highland Scot (1741 - 1796) who wrote this fascinating account of his days in service, first published in 1790 (this being the first edition since then after a lapse of 137 years). It deals with social life and customs and travels and voyages in Europe, Asia and Africa providing a rich panorama of life in the company of blind fiddlers, maid servants, the Scottish aristocracy, oriental princes, servants of The East India Company and men of great wealth including James Coutts, the banker. It was Macdonald who caught the dying words of Sterne, the author of Tristram Shandy - "Now it is come". Hard back; no dust jacket; 256 pages including index; 8 illustrations. Red cloth boards with gold stamping on front and spine. Front and rear hinges cracked; binding cracked at pages 160/161 but still holding; contents unmarked. Previous owner's name on front paste down and notations on rear endpaper. Pages lightly tanned; scattered foxing and smudging throughout - please see the photographs.
