Please check out the photos! Ted Shawn (born Edwin Myers Shawn; October 21, 1891 – January 9, 1972) was a male pioneer of American modern dance. He created the Denishawn School together with his wife Ruth St. Denis. After their separation he created the all-male company Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers. With his innovative ideas of masculine movement, he was one of the most influential choreographers and dancers of his day. He was also the founder and creator of Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts, and "was knighted by the King of Denmark for his efforts on behalf of the Royal Danish Ballet. Ted Shawn wrote and published nine books that provided a foundation for Modern Dance. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, dancer and director Ted Shawn originally studied theology and had no thought of becoming a dancer. After suffering from diphtheria, however, he took up dancing in order to strengthen his legs. While in New York City in 1914, Shawn met dancer Ruth St. Denis, and the two were married shortly after. The next year, Shawn and St. Denis founded Denishawn, a dance school and company that became well known throughout the United States. Hollywood studios often looked to Denishawn for dance talent, and the school offered a varied curriculum of dance classes, from ballet to Eastern dance, throughout the country. The collaboration of Shawn and St. Denis produced a dancing style that amalgamated a kind of exhibitionistic ballroom style with Greek and Asian influences. After Shawn and St. Denis separated in 1931, Shawn moved to a farm in Massachusetts and formed a small dance company called Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers. The company toured the United States until 1941, presenting a variety of works, many of which were inspired by Native American culture and others of which were influenced by modernist dance from Germany that focused on themes associated with power, force, and energy. Later in the 1940s, Shawn's farm became the home of Jacob's Pillow, a summer dance school and festival.
