Description: The Portsmouth National League Football Corporation was capitalized at $25,000 on June 12, 1930 and the team nicknamed "the Spartans" began its premier season in the NFL on September 14 with a game against the Newark Tornadoes. The Portsmouth Spartans would play four years in the league until 1934 when they were relocated to Detroit and were renamed the Lions. Early memorabilia from this legendary team is quite scarce with only a handful of programs known. This unique ticket is from the 5th home game of the 1930 Season (October 15) and was the Spartans' 3rd night game in the history of the franchise. Their opponent was the Ironton Tanks—an independent professional team coached by Hall of Famer, Earle "Greasy" Neale. In 1930 the Tanks defeated two of the best NFL teams, the Giants and the Bears. The Portsmouth Spartans narrowly lost by a score of 16 to 15. This is one of only three known tickets from the Spartans' first NFL season. The roster for both teams is featured below. Their best season was 1931 when, amid some controversy, they finished second to the Green Bay Packers.
