Mortimer Wheeler & wife at excavation in Verulam Verulam, 20 miles from London, is the scene of remarkable discoveries of the Ancient Romans in Britain, in recent excavations conducted by Doctor R.E. Mortimer Wheeler and his wife, both expert archaeologists of the London Museum Verulam (now known as St. Albans), was not only a Roman metropolis, but it was the great treasury of the Roman legions in England. It is believed by antiquarians that a Roman mint existed at Verulam, and large quantities of coins, mostly of bronze, but some of pure gold, have been unearthed. The excavations are proving a mine of antiquarian interest and information, and an important light may be thrown on the Roman occupation of Britain, which is shown to have continued for five hundred years. Shown above are Doctor and Mrs. Wheeler in a wine cellar which has been uncovered. Several vessels found were still intact. Photo measures 10.25 x 8 inches. Photo Is dated 1930.
