Description: HAWAIIAN ART Published by the famous Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu, in 1931 this slender volume was, surprisingly, one of the first ever books devoted to the subject of the indigenous sculpture, carvings, ceremonial garments, etc. of the Hawaiian Islands. The author was H(uc) M(azelot) Luquiens, an artist born in Massachusetts who came to Hawaii in 1917 and became a leading painter, teacher, and promoter of art on the islands, dubbed "the dean of Hawaiian artists". This rare hardcover first (and only) edition remains in good shape for its years. The covers show minor soiling and some general age and handling, including bumping to the forward corners, with some affect to the top corner of the text (photo #4). The binding is cracked at the second page, otherwise sound; the title page has thin tears at the top and bottom inner edges; the text is otherwise in fine shape, no stains, writing, creases, etc. A very scarce collector's item which lists elsewhere for $500 and up. Hardcover, issued without a jacket, 6.25" X 9.5", v + 59 pages, illustrated throughout. Ships promptly & securely.
