Description: AUTHOR: William Buehler Seabrook (February 22, 1884 – September 20, 1945) was an American occultist, explorer, traveler, journalist and writer, born in Westminster, Maryland. He began his career as a reporter and City Editor of the Augusta Chronicle in Georgia, worked at the New York Times, and later became a partner in an advertising agency in Atlanta. He is well-known for his writing on, and engaging in, cannibalism. Seabrook's 1929 book The Magic Island, which documents his experiences with Haitian Voodoo in Haiti, is considered the first popular English-language work to describe the concept of zombies. EDITION: Harcourt, Brace used several methods to identify first editions, including "No Additional Printings Listed". I have researched this book and found second, third and fourth printings, all identified as such. In the page before the title page, the author's prior books are listed and they end with this book, published in 1935 and DO NOT include his 1938 book "These Foreigners: Americans All". This book was therefore printed prior to his next book and, as the only copy I have found without a printing listed or a later date code from the 1940's, this is therefore assumed to be a first edition. In addition, the Wiki page on this memoir shows a copy of the first edition, which is shown to have these red boards. BOOK: HARDCOVER WITH NO DUST JACKET. CONDITION IS GOOD PLUS OVERALL ASYLUM:Asylum, also known as Asylum (An Alcoholic Takes the Cure), is a memoir by American travel writer William Seabrook, first published in 1935 by Harcourt Brace. The book documents Seabrook's experiences in Bloomingdale Asylum in New York, where he was committed from 1933 to 1934 or 1935 for his alcoholism. Asylum is mentioned, though not by name, in The Crack-Up, a 1945 posthumous collection of essays by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In 2015, Ryan Holiday of the Observer called Asylum "not just quite possibly one of the first modern addiction/recovery memoirs, but perhaps the most honest and haunting accounts of the struggle for mental health in literature.
