Description: A very mundane object with a history like few others. The Boys in the Boat was a book written about the US rowing team from Seattle taking gold against the Germans in the 1936 Olympics. Eight men from Seattle traveled there for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It was colder than usual, the Germans were dominating the rowing competitions and the US team won the mens 8 in a big upset. Fast forward to the 1950s and John White went to work for Bethlehem Steel in Pennsylvania. I found this within 10 miles of that campus meaning it was most likely him who brought this back from Kopenick Germany, where the rowing competitions took place, as a souvenir along with other things and his gold medal, of which there were eight. No other object like this has surfaced from the 1936 Olympics making it one of a kind. I have to believe that any surviving examples were burned for heat in the closing stages of WWII when resources for Germany were literally used up. The only reason this is here is because an athlete looked at it, briefly thought about and packed it in his trunk while preparing for his return trip home. Its that personal, it has that story, that history, its a mundane object but it's also not. It's an extremely personal link to the Olympics that was supposed to demonstrate Germany's might and triumph but all of that turned out quite differently. Condition is excellent.
