Description: This phenomenal jumbo-sized ultra-high relief 1954 medal celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the return of Danzig, the Venice of the North, from the Teutonic Knights to Poland in 1454. It also celebrates the return of Danzig from Germany to Poland in 1945 insofar as it was the first Official Medal of Gdansk (and its first purely Polish medal) after WW2. Virtually the entire German-speaking population had fled or been expelled by then. The highly detailed obverse depicts a girl bestowing a ship (representing the Hanseatic League) to a seated woman (representing Poland itself) holding a shield with the Great Eagle of Poland, while a fisherman prepares to bestow her with what appear to be the royal leggings of a medieval Polish King, presumably King Casimir the Great (if you know the history behind this, please share it). The wall behind the woman is lined with a tapestry of multiple seals of the City of Free Danzig!! The equally detailed reverse features a splendid panoramic view of Old Danzig with many a legendary landmark including City Hall and the Marienkirche (St. Mary's Cathedral), before which the Great Seal of the Free City of Danzig and 2 lions appear yet again. The icing on the cake is the sturdy one-of-a-kind handcrafted, handstitched leather case embossed with the Great Seal and Lions of Danzig. The case alone is a $50-$75 value! Utterly spectacular melding of history, high relief imagery, nickel silver* and leather!! * Looks, feels and lasts like real silver No other examples of this medal found on Ebay or elsewhere on the internet!!
